03 About the facilities of MieMu

A new “hub for cultural and intellectual explorations,” which contributes to connecting the past and future of Mie and fostering human and regional development

Together with visitors and citizens of Mie, MieMu explores the nature, history and culture of the prefecture and conduct activities to conserve, hand down and make good use of such heritage. The museum has a three-story building, which consists of the Storage Area (on the first and second floors), the Entrance Area (on the second floor) and the Interactive and Exhibition Areas (on the second and third floors). The building has a rather simple layout so that visitors can explore it easily, and the integration of the Interactive and Exhibition Areas leads to new activities. Besides, visitors and citizens of Mie can become more interested in or curious about their local communities by using the museum and viewing its exhibits, and regional activities and museum activities will have a good influence on each other through their participation in museum activities.

Facilities

Entrance area

The Entrance area, a bright space open to anybody, is equipped with two entrances, namely the main entrance (entrance and exit) and the entrance from the Museum Field located to the east of the museum building. It also has an eating and resting area as well as a museum shop, which are filled with attractive and enjoyable things of Mie.

Interactive area

The Interactive area plays the role as a site for active “interactions” which are typically emphasized at MieMu. Through functional collaboration among the rooms within this bright area which is open to anybody, we can offer activities to meet a wide variety of purposes as well as natural, historical and cultural interests of visitors and citizens of Mie.

Exhibition area

The Exhibition Area is located at the most ideal site for the flow of visitors and conservation of exhibits in the museum. Collaboration with the Interactive Area can create synergy and lead to an expansion of museum activities. Through two types of exhibitions, namely the “Main Exhibition” to introduce the attractiveness of the rich and diverse nature, history and culture of Mie and the “Special Exhibition” which consists of various exhibitions of different sizes dealing with different themes, we explore the diversity which is typically found in Mie and transmit information on it to those living within or outside the prefecture.

Museum field

The garden located to the east of the museum building is made up of the “Woodland Area,” the “Exchange Space” and the “Outdoor Learning Space.” The Woodland Area is a place for relaxation, which we should cherish and use in cooperation with visitors and citizens of Mie as a site to conduct fieldwork including nature observations and enjoy a walk through nature while showing respect for its original landscape and vegetation. Besides, a wide variety of events and the like take place in the Exchange Space and the Outdoor Leaning Space.

Role as an archive of official documents

MieMu archives historically important official documents created and selected by Mie Prefecture, and show them, as well as a variety of materials and historical old documents conserved at the museum, to visitors and citizens of the prefecture. People can definitely feel more excited by viewing those materials because they are rarely available to the public.

Research studies area

The Research studies area has rooms used for various activities as well as machines and devices necessary for the restoration, conservation, research and analysis of materials that are essential for museum activities.

Storage area

The Storage area, designed for safe storage of valuable materials which need to be stored with less influence by the air, consists of multiple storage rooms where a wide variety of materials are stored in proper environments after being classified by type and quality.

Management and machinery area

The management and machinery area has various rooms used for proper management of the museum and efficient maintenance of its building.
