YANAGIHARA Yoshitasu Memorial Gallery
Special feature 【YUHARA Kazuo's Sculpture and Drawing】
January 4~March 21, 2011
YANAGIHARA Yoshitastu Memorial Gallery, Hall B
In the Japanese art scene of the latter half of the 20th century, YUHARA Kazuo(1930- )’s sculpture shows characteristic style of severity eliminating any emotion. His sculptural style attempts to attain simplified pure form by reducing any unnecessary element thoroughly, which can be regarded as correspondence to the Minimal Art since the end of the 1950’s.
On the other hand, however, Yuhara’s work cannot be reduced to absolute reductionism. For example, gate-shape often utilized shows the importance of not only work as object, but also space surrounding it and even invading its interior occasionally. Or, in works exhibited here are introduced factors such as colored wire netting and silicone resins which dislocate purity of reduced shape.
On the opening of the Mie Prefectural Art Museum in 1982, Yuhara’s open-air work Untitled No.8-82 was settled at a platform of the stairway toward the public entrance of the museum. Moreover, in 1988 we held his retrospective exhibition. Because of these circumstances, Yuhara donated 3 works to the museum in 2009. On this occasion we present these donated works with 4 sculptures and 7 works on paper called tableau-en-papier already belonging to our collection. We hope this small exhibition to be an occasion to reconsider Yuhara’s work which questions the essencial condition of sculpture.
