Displacements. Seven Artists of Valencia
(Desplazamientos. Siete artistas valencianos)
25 October 1997- 8 February 1998 Hours: 9:30a.m.- 5:00 p.m. In commemoration of 5 anniversary of friendly relations between Generalitat Valenciana and Mie Prefecture, we presented an exhibition featuring 7 active artists of Valencia. Artists included are; Ramon de Soto(1942- ), Miquel Navarro(1945- ), Angeles Marco(1947- ), Joan Cardells(1948- ), Carmen Calvo(1950- ), Jose Sanleon(1953- ) and Natividad Navalon(1961- ). Soto's work consists of small parts which remind of architectural fragment such as arch, bridge, staircase, etc. They are scattered in vast space, and there appears a sensation of extension of space itself, filled with silence. Navarro's work also consists of small parts, and reminds of architectural fragments, too. But in contrast to Soto, Navarro's congregation of pieces represents dynamic life of city. Sanleon's tableau represents construction of city, too. Though his picture surface is divided geometrically, there intrude texture of cloth for tent and collage of photographies, by which monolithic flatness of picture surface turns into polyphonic voices. Calvo's work also consists of small parts. But in her case pieces above all communicate layers of time in which pieces passed by. One of main themes of Marco's work is traffic. Series of shallow boxes accept anything, but grease coated inside stops anything, too. Moreover combination of boxes is alway exposed to various possiblilities of changeability. In Cardells' drawing by graphite, images such as quarreling men or still life are not put upon surface of paper, but rather excavated from inside of thickness of paper. Navalon's works show femminist approach to women's culture. Velvet cylinder represents women's body and at the same time women's dress. There one can read various conditions of women's life in present-day society. 7 artists' works show co-existence / contradiction of materiality and conceptuality, by whichi is brought about feeling of tension by each ways. There one may be able to discern at least one of charasteristics of contemporary spanish arts. This exhibition was supervised by Fernando Castro Florez |
