It is my great pleasure to see the “São Pau1o Art Museum Exhibition” take place here, centering on the collection in the São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Museum, Brazil, which is best known of the art museums in South America.

The collection of the São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum, founded in 1947 by the late Assis Chateaubriand, or the “newspaper tycoon of Latin America”, that includes a number of masterpieces of religious paintings from the latter half of European Middle Ages down to the contemporary arts, as well as sculptures by Degas and so forth, has always been the great envy of the amateurs of the art of the whole world.

We are exceedingly delighted to have the sixty masterpieces that are truly representative of the more than one thousand works of art in the co11ection of the SãoPaulo Assis Chateaubriand Aer Museum, to inaugurate our newly completed Mie Prefectural Art Museum. The sixty exhibits, though not profuse in number, will be fully capable of offering an opportunity to survey the development of European art. Further, the addition of contemporary art from Brazil will certainly contribute towards even deeper mutual understanding between Brazil and Japan.

May I express my sincerest gratitude to Prof. Pietro Maria Bardi, Director São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand Art Museum, as well as to all the other parties related from Brazil and Japan, for their invariable and considerate support. May I also express my greatest expectations that this exhibition be received with appreciation and sympathy of the people of Mie Prefecture.

Tetsuro Kagesato
Director (on 1982)
Mie Prefectural Art Museum.
