MOTONAGA Sadamasa (1922- ) , born at Iga in Mie, began to produce abstract painting after moving to Kobe in 1952. In 1955 Motonaga participated in Gutai Art Association organized by Yoshihara Jiro. From the latter half of the 1950's to the middle of the 1960's Motonaga was estimated by his abstract work in which paint was poured upon canvas or panel. In 1966 Motonaga travelled to U.S.A. and happend to meet acrylic paint there. As a result of this encounter, he transformed his painting style, and from about 1970 appeared in his work humorous images with bright colors. Motonaga has continued to produce not only painting, but also sculptures, designs of chair and tapestry, illustrated books and performance. In recent years he has dealt with installation combining painting, sculpture and video. This exhibition should show comprehensive aspects of Motonaga's activities over half of a century. We follow his developement through his principal paintings from his early years to recent days, with objects, installation and drawings which show his conception behind his works. |
