Exhibition Overview

 The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), located in Providence, Rhode Island, is an art school founded in 1877 with a long history. One of the oldest art institutions in the United States, it is located adjacent to Brown University, a liberal arts institution founded in 1764. To support students in their study of art and design, the RISD Museum was created and its initial holdings consisted of works donated by local patrons with strong interests in art and disign. The museum's collection encompasses artworks from around the world, including Japanese art. Of the approximately 4,000 Japanese works in the collection, a particular highlight is the approximately 700 Japanese bird-and-flower prints gifted by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948), a Rhode Islander by birth, and wife of the philanthropist, John D. Rockefeller Jr.

 This exhibition features 163 selections from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller collection of bird-and-flower prints from the RISD Museums. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to appreciate a comprehensive collection of bird-and-flower prints, with a focus on works by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). We hope that many will enjoy the visually compelling world of bird-and-flower prints.
