Exhibition Overview

　We are staging an exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Albert Marquet, a master of 20th-century French painting. This is the first retrospective of his work in Japan for 35 years.

　Born in the south-western French port city of Bordeaux, Marquet met Henri Matisse and others in Paris. Together with their fellow painters, they developed a style known as Fauvism, characterised by intense colours and free brushstrokes. However, Marquet never wavered from his approach of painting based on careful observation. Over time, his style evolved into a gentler one, characterised by nuanced, intermediate colours. Marquet’s favourite subjects were scenes of the streets of Paris and the River Seine, as well as views of harbours and beaches encountered during his travels along the Mediterranean coast. He produced numerous captivating landscape paintings, often viewed from a window and featuring bold compositions.

　This exhibition comprises approximately 100 works, including oil paintings, pastels and drawings, drawn from the collections of museums, galleries and private collectors in France and Japan. Through these works, the exhibition traces Marquet’s formative years as a painter and reveals how his unique style came to be established. It also focuses on several motifs and themes, particularly scenes by the water. We invite you to savour the distinctive charm of Marquet’s works, created by the interplay of light and atmosphere brought about by his delicate and refined use of colour.
