Exhibition Overview

  In 2003, the Mie Prefectural Art Museum established the Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Gallery following a donation of works by Yoshitatsu Yanagihara (1910–2004), a sculptor who was a leading figure in the post-war Japanese figurative sculpture scene. Since then, the Memorial Gallery has continuously exhibited Yanagihara’s works and materials, striving to honour his legacy.

  In 2019, with the support of the artist’s family, the Y² project was launched as a new initiative to showcase the next generation of artists. This third exhibition introduces Mizuno Katsunori, a video artist from Mie Prefecture.

  Mizuno meticulously captures the unassuming phenomena found within nature and everyday landscapes, presenting scenes that might otherwise be overlooked right before our eyes through the filter of film. His works encourage a renewed awareness of the passage of time and the fluctuations of daily life, whilst stimulating our interest in the act of ‘seeing’.

  The passage of time and the shifting of forms—Mizuno identified a commonality between the distinct media of sculpture and film in the phenomena that emerge over time, and engaged with Yanagihara and his work. For this exhibition, the artist himself has selected works by Yanagihara from the museum’s collection to be displayed alongside his own. We invite you to look forward to the space created by the interplay and resonance between the two artists’ works.
