Exhibition Overview

HASHIMOTO Heihachi (1897-1935) was a sculptor born in present-day Ise City. After receiving training in sculpture in Ise, he moved to Tokyo to study wood carving under SATO Chozan. 25 years old, his “Cat” was selected for the first time at the Japan Art Institute Exhibition, and he immediately attracted attention for his high skill and talent.  His success was such that he was known as “Hashimoto-kun with a tree,” but regrettably, he passed away in 1935, ending his life of 38 years.
HASHIMOTO Heihachi, who spent most of his life in his hometown of Ise, was inspired by the abundant nature around him and deepened his original thought by studying ancient sculptures and philosophies from the East and West. His works, which are based on his insights into the mysteries of nature and life, continue to attract many people to this day.
This exhibition, the first retrospective of HASHIMOTO Heihachi's work in 15 years, traces his life through representative works and documents, and explores his creative world.
