Exhibition Overview

Uematsu Eiji (born 1949 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture) is a contemporary artist based in Iga City, Mie Prefecture. He began by gluing and drying clay, then added kiln firing and field firing, and has continued to work with the theme of “earth and fire” for a long time.
Uematsu is interested in the workings of nature and the flow of time in the universe, and sees his own existence as part of this flow. He tries to “create as little as possible without creating.” In his work, he places importance on observing the individuality of the clay, and on discoveries and surprises that come by chance. At first glance, his works may appear to be simple lumps of clay, but they strongly stimulate the viewer's memory and awareness of the individuality of the materials and his eye for observing the changes of nature.
In this exhibition, Uematsu will combine new and old works in the space of the Yanagihara Yoshitatsu Memorial Hall. We hope you will enjoy his unique expression born from his dialogue with soil and nature.
