Exhibition Overview
This exhibition introduces three unique painters produced in Mie Prefecture during the Edo period!
Soga Shohaku (1730-1781), an eccentric painter with a strong personality, Gessen (1741-1809), a monk who took up painting to help the poor, and Mashiyama Sessai (1754-1819), a lord who valued art and friendship. (1754-1819), a lord who valued art and friendship. The three painters were all three different in their positions and styles of painting. What they all have in common is that they created their paintings in Mie Prefecture and their strong beliefs. They pursued their own unique paths, even if the world considered them unorthodox.
This exhibition introduces a diverse group of Edo paintings from Mie Prefecture by Sessai, including works by Shohaku and Gessen from the museum's collection, which is the best collection of Sessai in Japan.
