Exhibition Overview
Ono Chikkyo (1889-1979) was a Japanese-style painter who continued to paint the beautiful scenery of Japan from season to season through honest dialogue with nature. Fascinated by the beautiful nature of Nakiri, Daio-cho, Shima City, he is also a painter related to Mie Prefecture who worked on "Nakiri Village".
Born in Kasaoka City, Okayama Prefecture, Chikkyo left his hometown at the age of 14 to study under Takeuchi Seiho in Kyoto. Interested in Western art and artistic thought, he interacts extensively with Western-style painters, scholars, and critics, and participates in cutting-edge movements that aim to create new art. In 1918 (Taisho 7), up-and-coming Japanese painters founded the Kokuga Sosaku Kyokai (Japanese Painting Creation Association) and took on the challenge of reforming Japanese painting. After the dissolution of the association, he played an active role in the official exhibition as a central painter of the Kyoto art world. With rich colors and poetic Japanese nature, he has reached his own unique level of painting.
This exhibition will be held with the full cooperation of the Chikkyo Art Museum, Kasaoka, which was established to honor Chikkyo's achievements and pass on his achievements to future generations. Through representative works and drawings from the early years to his later years in the museum collection, we will follow Chikkyo's career and explore the charm of his art.
