Explanation |
In this portrait of a young woman facing straight ahead, some rough touches can be seen in the hair, clothing, and background, but the woman’s smooth skin is rendered with a high degree of polish and not a single visible brushstroke. The Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir first established a distinctive style through portraiture, and produced many outstanding works brimming with a sense of joy. Around the time he painted this work, Renoir was in the process of developing innovative color schemes free from the confines of objective chromatic realism, and was supporting himself with portrait commissions. Executed with solid technical proficiency, this is believed to be one such commissioned portrait. [Title in French] Jeune femme en bleu |
