Explanation

This depiction of the Crucifixion is by Georges Rouault, widely considered the greatest religious painter of the 20th century. The painting shows Christ crucified in the center of the painting, flanked by a kneeling Mary Magdalene and the standing figures of the Virgin Mary and John the Apostle.
The Crucifixion was a theme Rouault frequently addressed from the 1910s onward. While different figures appear in the works, Christ features prominently in all of them. This painting is believed to date from the late 1930s, when several similar works were also produced.
