Explanation |
The French painter Claude Monet was a standard-bearer of Impressionism. In 1889 he produced more than 20 oil paintings in the Creuse Valley in central France, including this work depicting a hillside at dusk. Monet’s juxtaposition of reds and greens creates a backlit mountainside with a wealth of nuance. As a series of darker-toned paintings, the Creuse Valley works occupy a unique position in Monet’s oeuvre. The series was unveiled on the occasion of a two-person exhibition with sculptor Auguste Rodin, and drew public attention to the new frontier at which Monet had arrived.
