Explanation |
Born in Tokyo in 1886, Fujita lived in France for approximately half his life. In the 1920s he independently developed the painting technique of the “milky white ground,” for which he gained widespread renown. He pursued an essentially Japanese style of painting, on paper and silk surfaces, but using Western painting materials. In his later years, he became a French citizen and adopted the name Léonard Foujita. Here Fujita, with his distinctive black bowl haircut, holds a fine-tipped brush in his right hand and rests it against his cheek. He gazes out at the viewer while a cat peeks out from behind his left shoulder, as if sidling up to him. |
