Explanation |
Originally from Kagoshima, Fujishima Takeji became an assistant professor in the Department of Western Painting at Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1896. He consistently exhibited his works with the Hakubakai group and in government-sponsored art exhibitions, and at the zenith of his career he was recognized as one of Japan’s greatest Western-style painters. In his later years he traveled extensively throughout Japan and East Asia in search of ideal scenery, and painted many excellent landscapes. This work was produced in 1932, when he was traveling around Mie Prefecture. The waves are rendered with bold brushstrokes, which contrast with the craggy mountains expressed with patchwork-like geometric areas of color. |
