Explanation |
With a light touch and vibrant, translucent palette, the 20th-century French painter Raoul Dufy gained popularity for his stylish depictions of contemporary society. This work shows a scene at the port of Sainte-Adresse, near the artist’s hometown. The cargo ship in the center of the painting is crisply outlined by scraping off black paint to expose a layer of white underneath. Dufy repeatedly painted black cargo ships in his final years. He was inspired by the phenomenon of his vision darkening when he turned his eyes to the sun, and used black to represent intense light. [Title in French] La cargo noir et l'arc-en-ciel |
