Explanation

The Church of St. Anne still stands today in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. This painting depicts a street under wintry skies, with the street given a zigzag form not present in the actual cityscape, and the dome of the church greatly inflated. The artist, Saeki Yūzō, was introduced to avant-garde art in France and painted the streets of Paris in brushstrokes overflowing with vigor. The year he made this painting, Saeki was completing works at an astonishing pace, but his health deteriorated as he worked outdoors in bad weather, and he died in August of the same year at the age of 30.
