[Commentary] Francisco de Goya, First Chamber Painter of Spain, painted this portrait of Alberto Foraster (1737-1820), a military officer who held high positions such as Royal Guardsman and Brigadier General of the Cavalry. Foraster was a friend of Manuel Godoy, the king’s closest advisor, who helped him rise through the ranks. Godoy was also among Goya’s patrons, and had his own portrait painted by Goya as well.
