Explanation

Okayama-born Kojima Torajirō studied Western-style painting at Tokyo Fine Arts School, then went abroad to study in Paris. From 1909 onward he was a pupil of Jean Delvin and Emile Claus at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. In addition to his activities as a painter, he was also involved in assembling the collection of the Ohara Museum of Art.
A girl in a kimono sits on a sofa, looking out at the viewer with a somewhat nervous expression. The technique of mixing different types of brushstrokes in a single painting was one he mastered while studying abroad.
