Explanation |
Koga Harue was a painter who worked in various avant-garde styles, from Cubism to Surrealism, and dealt with modernist imagery. He made another oil painting of approximately the same dimensions and title as this work, which he is known to have given as a gift to the future Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari. This work shares that painting’s same overall palette, glittering fireworks, boats, buildings, and plant-like motifs. It is a poetic and fantastical rendering of a night lit by fireworks, with various objects floating vaguely in the background. |
