Explanation

Ogawa Norio was born in Mie Prefecture. At first he studied Nihonga (modern Japanese-style painting) at Kyoto Municipal High School of Arts and Crafts, forging friendships with Okamoto Shinsō, Fukuda Heihachirō and other classmates. After withdrawing from the school, he studied Western-style painting in Osaka.
This painting is of Nakiri in Daiō-chō, Mie Prefecture. The scenery of Nakiri under the brilliant sunlight, and the activities of people living in harmony with abundant nature, were subjects that captured the hearts of Taishō Era (1912-1926) painters. In terms of both subject and style, the painting shows the influence of Post-Impressionism, to which many Taishō-era painters were devoted. This is a rare oil painting by Ogawa, whose extant works as a whole are scarce.
