Item Contents
Artist FONTANESI, Antonio
Date ca. 1876-78
Material Oil on canvas
Donator Gift of the Okada Cultural Foundation
Explanation Born in Northern Italy, Antonio Fontanesi came to Japan in 1876 and taught painting at the Imperial College of Arts, the country’s first government-established art school, where he conveyed the techniques, knowledge, and philosophy of Western painting to Japanese Western-style painters of the early Meiji Era (1868-1912).
This work is thought to date from the artist’s time in Japan. While the overall palette is somber, the setting sun, red-lit sky, and surface of the water stand out as vivid highlights, testifying to the artist’s deep insights into nature and mastery of technique.
