Explanation | Born in Northern Italy, Antonio Fontanesi came to Japan in 1876 and taught painting at the Imperial College of Arts, the country’s first government-established art school, where he conveyed the techniques, knowledge, and philosophy of Western painting to Japanese Western-style painters of the early Meiji Era (1868-1912). This work is thought to date from the artist’s time in Japan. While the overall palette is somber, the setting sun, red-lit sky, and surface of the water stand out as vivid highlights, testifying to the artist’s deep insights into nature and mastery of technique. |
