Activities

Research and Study

The basis of all the activities at the museum is thorough research done by curators. We are conducting various research on special themes, centering around our collection and around the art and the artists that have made special contributions to Mie Prefecture both in preparations for spacial exhibitions and to our permanent collection.

Collection and Presentation of Works of Art and Research Materials

We are currently collecting in these areas; Japanese modern paintings from the Meiji Period to the present, foreign works which had profond influences on Japanese artisits, works by artists who have had deep connections with Mie Prefecture since the Edo Period and contemporary works of art.
We aim at a collection which makes it possible to understandthe general stream of the history of Modern Art.
The collected works and materials are categorized and preserved in the storage and regularly fumigated.

Display and Exhibition

Through the display of the premanent collction and special exhibitions , we present to the public the fruit of our activities in the clearest form. We especially attach preat importance to the former. We change display four times a year. In these displays we intend to present the outline of the development of Modern Art (particulary the development of Jaoanese Modern Western-style paintings).
We organize about seven special exhibitions a year on original themes including a few collaborative exhibitions.

Community Relations and Social Education

One of the functions of the museum is to appearl actively to the public at all times. To fulfill this function, we sponcer thise acitiveties; a symosium and a lecture on art, temporary museums constructed at various locations throughout Mie Prefecture, the publication of the museum newepaper "Hill Wind"(in Japanese).
