Explanation |
This drawing captures the brief gesture of an unclothed woman, looking downward with her right arm raised. With the right hand and lower half of the body cut off at the left and lower edges of the picture, the full body is not depicted. At first glance this appears to be an improvised sketch, but it was produced by transferring black lines from another sheet of paper using a press, then making additions in conte and red pastel. The French artist Edgar Degas was closely associated with the Impressionists and often depicted scenes from contemporary urban life. In his later years Degas repeatedly portrayed bathing women, primarily in pastel. [Title in French] Femme nue debout vue a micorps |
