Explanation

[Commentary]
This religious painting by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a 17th-century painter active in Seville, Spain, depicts St. Catherine, who was martyred for her Christian devotion during the Roman era. The wheel and sword used in her execution can be seen at the bottom of the painting.
A palm frond held by an angel descending from heaven signifies triumph over death, and is a symbol of honor for martyrs. During the Counter-Reformation, images of martyred saints who gave their lives for their faith were used to heighten the devoutness of the general public.

[Title in Spanish]
Santa Catalina de Alejandría
