Julio González Retrospective: Master of Iron Sculpture

Julio González(1876-1942) a sculpture born in Bar-celona,Spain, continues to be greatly respected for his pioneerring experments in iron sculpture. By Applying the technique of weldig to sculpture, González pavedthr way for many important sculptors who followed him such as DavidSmith, Anthony Caro, and Edu-ardo Chillida. He had a decisive influence on terntiethcentury sculpture comparable to that of Brancusi and Giacometti.
This exhibition, the first systematic presentation of the work of Julio González in Japan, contains approxi-mately 100 items, including examples of his metalwork and early sculptures produced in the 1910s. We hope that you will enjoy this overview of Gonzálezs career, featuring his earlist works as well as the iron pieces tha he produced during the decade from his conscios decision to become a sculptor until the end of his life.
As a sculptor, he forged, cut,bent, and welded iron, a material that had been familiar to him since chirdhood, in order to realize a unique concept of "sculpture created through an indissoluble connection between matter and space.
