The sky has always inspired artists’ imagination. In the realm of art, flying People (or flying human-like figures) have long been depicted. Painters and sculptors have represented invisible figures such as angels and celestial nymphs with great imagination. However, human beings could not conquer the actual sky until the late modern period. Both the sophisticated functions and the attractive forms of balloons, dirigibles and airplanes aroused artists’ interest. Aircraft became a new source of inspiration for both Western and Eastern artists in the 20th century. This exhibition shows the passion for flight—both imaginary and actual—through almost 120 artworks, including paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures, by artists of all ages and countries, from SOGA Sh?haku to PANAMARENKO. We especially focus on creative works that attempt to address the fundamental question of how to make the impossible possible. |
