Born in Akita Prefecture, Fukuda Toyoshiro(1904-1970) lived a life as one of the most famous Japanese-style painters in Showa era. Studied under two innovative painters, Kawabata Ryushi in Tokyo and Tsuchida Bakusen in Kyoto, young Toyoshiro made a great success in spite of his age. To create new style, he was engaged in various problems relating to color and line, perspective...etc. With this effort, he gained a reputation as a precursor of new Japanese-style painting. Meanwhile, he always thought about his hometown and depicted many sceneries in Akita. His works, nostalgic as well as innovative, still fascinate our eyes.
This year 2014, it has been 110 years since the artist was born. This anniversary retrospective shows his masterpieces, drawings and studies, with full cooperation of Akita Museum of Modern Art. |
