Fujishima Takeji (1867-1943), who had once lived in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, and his rival, Okada Saburosuke (1869-1939) both flourished from Meiji period through the beginning of Showa period. They also have trained many artists and served as bellwethers.
Although they had various opinions as an artist and their activities took different directions, there was a similarity between Fujishima and Okada, especially in their backgrounds. They both studied Western Painting in the private school of Soyama Sachihiko and appointed as associate professor of Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko (Tokyo Universty of the Arts).
Okada went to Europe as a scholarship student of Ministry of Education, and 8 years behind Fujishima also was sent Europe. The distance made their different expressions in the way of their paintings.
This exhibition comprises some 100 paintings of Fujishima and Okada, and presents how their activities reflected in the era of Japanese modern art.
