As the third of a series of exhibitions of Japanese contemporary sculpture, we present you the retrospective “Kazuo Yuhara”.

Born in 1930 in Tokyo, Kazuo Yuhara was graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he had studied sculpture. In 1962, he won the grand-prix with scholarship of studying abroad at the Competition of Maruzen Oil Foundation, Tokyo and left for Paris, where he worked from 1963 to 1980.

His sculptures before studying abroad were figurative. But in Paris, his works transformed themselves a great deal into abstract forms which were extremely simple and forceful. They are characterized by strong will to purify the material with its own nature and texture and to give it the metaphysical meaning, firmly rejecting all sorts of sentiment.

He has been working very energetical1y, exhibiting works in a number of exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, for example, the 5th Guggenheim International Exhibition of Sculpture, the 10th Sao Paolo Biennale and the Expo Museum of the Arts, Osaka. A lot of his works are in the collections of collectors in Europe and the United States. Since 1980 he has been working in Japan and his sculptures are now showing an original interpretation of space.

In this exhibition, which includes 60 sculptures and about 100 drawings, we would like to present you the course of the developpement of Yuhara’s art, from his early works such as ‘Lying Man’ to the most recent ‘Zone liberated from Meaning’ series. We hope it would provide a good opportunity to appreciate the beauty of contemporary sculptures and to come in touch with the spirit of the artist.

We are most grateful to the museums who have kindly lent us works for display, and to the various parties who have offered their cooperation.
