Yamamoto Masamichi
22 July - 20 August 2000 Hours: 9:30a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Admission: charged The sculptor Masamichi Yamamot, born in Kyoto in 1941, has won high praise for his lyrical sculptures characterized by a gentle sense and nostalgia. Yamamoto studied sculpture on the undergraduate and graduate level at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music before spending three years at the Accademia di Bell Arte in Rome where he studied with Pericle Fazzini. As a result of his experiences in Rome, Italian buildings and people and elements of the natural landscape began to appear in his sculpture. Ever since then, Yamamoto has been creating an original style of sculpture, inspired by scenes of everyday Italian life, which has been described as “landscape sculpture”. Later, in 1978 and 1979, Yamamoto lived in the United States. The ruins left by the ancient inhabitants of that country and its natural wonders provided new sources of inspiration for his sculpture. In addition to his landscape sculpture, Yamamoto is also known for his many figures of young women and mothers and children, rendered with honesty and sensitivity, found in locations throughout Japan. This exhibition gives a comprehensive view of Yamamoto’s artistic world with 48 sculptures, including seven new works, and 56 drawings. We would like to express our deep appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Yamamoto for their kind cooperation in helping us prepare for this exhibition. We would also like to thank the collectors who were so generous in loaning the valuable works in their possession, and the many other people who provided various forms of assistance. |
