Today we have several occasions to appreciate Ukiyoe as work of art, but in Edo period in which it was produced, Ukiyoe fulfilled its duties as a medium which communicated informations and dreams to people. Important genres of Ukiyoe such as ‘Actors’ and ‘Beauties’ correspond to stills or pamphlets of present-day theater or movie , and discharged duties of publicity. Moreover ‘Landscape’, which was added as an important genre in the latter half of Edo period, wsa utilized as guidebook or souvenir of tourism. Motives depicted in Ukiyoe were, however, not only practical information. Ukiyoe, meaning originally 'picture of floating world' and based on real world, would give pleasure to viewers and at the same time gain plastic attraction by arrangements and expressive inventions by the artisans such as composition or coloring. This exhibition features 53 Stations of Tokaido in the collection of the Kameyama Museum of Art. 53 Stations of Tokaido of Hoeido edition, which brought Utagawa Hiroshige into prominence, became best-seller at that time, and went into many editions. Success of 53 Stations of Tokaido of Hoeido edition, moreover, became opportunity to bring about works of the same theme not only by Hiroshige but also by other artisans. Such a reception of 53 Stations of Tokaido shows very well characteristic of Ukiyo-e which grows reflecting taste of people. In this exhibition we search fascination of Ukiyoe, which communicated informations and dreams to people, featuring 53 Stations of Tokaido by Hiroshige, Hoeido edition, and various series of the same subject. Simultaneously, as a first exhibition of Ukiyoe in the Mie Prefectural Art Museum, we install pictures of ‘Beauties’ and ‘Actors’ together, and present world of Ukiyoe prints, not only belonging to people in Edo period, but also continuing to fascinate us and people abroad beyond time and cultural background. |
