Late 19th and early 20th century Europe was home to a wide variety of artistic movements including the Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Nouveau, and Vienna Secession. This diverse creativity in the fields of art, decorative arts, architecture, and the graphic arts made Europe a splendid and colourful place.

This period saw Glasgow, Scotland flourish as the second major city of the British Empire, and Glasgow’s creative artists developed a new Glasgow Style which had a wide impact both in and out of Britain. The central figures in this style were known as “The Four” - namely Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), James Herbert MacNair, Margaret Macdonald, and Frances Macdonald.

The architect Mackintosh was strongly influenced by the traditional architecture styles of earlier periods while he explored questions of functionality and clarity, making him one of the pioneers of 20th century Modernism. Further, his unique talents grew not only in the field of architecture, they also nourished in the fields of furniture, metal arts, posters, watercolours, and the various design fields related to the creation of daily space. His architectural works, particularly his representative work the Glasgow School of Art structures, were created as designed spaces where he harmonized all elements - from chairs and tables to lighting fixtures and wall treatments - within his own unique aesthetic framework.

This exhibition, a first in Japan on this subject, will provide an introduction to Mackintosh’s diverse talents as it rediscovers the pioneering spirit born in Glasgow through an examination primarily of the works of Mackintosh and the other three members of The Four, with works by Jessie King, Ann Macbeth, Jessie Newbery, George Walton and Talwin Morris and other members of Glasgow School.

We would like to take this opportunity to offer our deepest gratitude to Glasgow Museums for their whole-hearted cooperation, Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow with one of the world’s greatest Mackintosh Collection, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow City Archives, National Museums of Scotland, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Osaka City Museum of Modern Art and all the other contributing collections for the loan of their precious works. Further, we would like to sincerely acknowledge the British Council, Glasgow City Council, the Japan Institute of Architects, Architectural Institute of Japan, the Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., and Japan Interior Designers Association for their support. Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the directors of the exhibition, Roger Billcliffe and Haruhiko Fujita, for their superb work on this exhibition.
