The Mie Prefectural Art Museum is proud to present the exhibition “Handicrafts Today - Six Kyoto Artists: Tradition in Innovation / Innovation in Tradition”. The pieces brought together for this exhibition show us the many different forms that modern handicrafts can take. The collection contains works in a rich array of materials, such as porcelain, fiber, lacquer, metal, wood, and bamboo, and at the same time, it includes works made for a wide variety or functions, ranging from items made for practical use in daily life to pieces that are true objet d’art. This exhibition examines the world of contemporary handicrafts, in all of its continually evolving diversity, while paying special attention to the two notions of “tradition” and “innovation”. Of course, the notions of “tradition” and “innovation”, which one hears mentioned so often, are not as easily divisible as they might seem, given that these two themes are usually intertwined in a complex fashion within the work of an individual artist. It is important to consider the ways in which each individual artist has thought about and confronted these issues in his or her own work and to investigate how these themes manifest themselves in the works themselves.

The six artists represented in this exhibition are all important figures who have helped move contemporary Japanese art in new, creative directions. All of them now reside and work in Kyoto, but they have not been active only with Japan; rather, their work was has continually appeared in exhibitions around the world, earning them international reputations as artists or the highest caliber. These six artists use various materials to produce quite different types of work, ranging from practical vessels in traditional forms to objet d’art in innovative shapes. By viewing their work in this exhibition, we have the rare chance of surveying a selection of pieces that represent a miniature map of the topography of the state of handicrafts today. This exhibition contains approximately eighty works of art. In looking at these pieces, we hope that you, our viewers, will think about what each of these artists was expressing in each piece, just as we hope that you will see each work as a critical enterprise forming one facet of the complex, multifaceted world of contemporary handicrafts.

This autumn will mark the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the Mie Prefectural Art Museum. At the beginning of this special year, it is an enormous pleasure to be able to share with you this exhibition of artists who have ushered in a new age of handicrafts. I would like to express my warmest appreciation to the six artists represented in this exhibition. Also, I extend my deepest thanks to the institutions and collectors who entrusted us with their valuable pieces and to the numerous individuals who helped us make this outstanding exhibition a reality.
