Recently Asia has been making such a rapid progress economically,that America and Europe can’t take their eyes off it. At the same time we can see a remarkable advance in art and culture there, as well.

It is equally true in contemporary art, Korean art especially is worthy of notice. It was during the late 70’s that Korean contemporary art was introduced to Japan, then it became a great sensation through one-man shows or exhibitions. They were mainly based on monochromatic scheme, which was the main current of Korean art in the70’s. Thereafter Korean contemporary art has shown a great deal of diversity since the mid 80’s.

In this exhibition we can show you that variety; Some works are based on the traditional materials and some on using various media freely. As to the artist, there are some great masters and some young and energetic artists, including the ones who are active outside Korea. In this way we expect to introduce the up-to-date artistic situation in Korea. Of course this exhibition does not get all aspects of Korean contemporary art, however, we are proud of this exhibition since it has a wide variety of styles.

Moreover we hope this exhibition will give you more understanding of Korean art.

Last, but not least, we appreciate the 37 artists, who were willing to contribute to this exhibition, and the Korean National Museum of Contemporary Art that cooperate in storage of works, in providing of data and other advice, and the Sonje Museum of Contemporary Art, without whose cooperation we would have been unable to show these works in Korea.
