It is a great pleasure for us to be able to hold the first exhibition in Japan of the sculptor Dani Karavan, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1930.

Although he is a sculptor, Karavan is a unique one of an unprecedented type. His works are not the type of sculptures that are placed on bases to be appreciated as works of art. Although their scale is reminiscent of gigantic ruins, they are not designed to be lived in and therefore cannot be considered architecture or cities. Karavan incorporates the existing geographical,climatic, and historical environment of a particular site in his media to turn it into a work of art which coexists with his own creation. He has been making continuous attempts at magnanimous and extremely humane creations.

Due to the character of his works as described above, one has to admit that the essence of his oeuvre tends to be difficult to understand away from the actual site. This may have been one of the reasons Karavan’s works have not been introduced to Japan earlier despite his fame in Israel and Europe. The current exhibition in Japan surveys the entire aspect of this sculptor making full use of video monitors, photographs, and models. At the same time, the display in each museum has been planned to function as a work in itself. Karavan has turned the museum into a “site” of meditation, which differs from usual.
