24 October to 6 December 2009 Hours: 9:30a.m.- 5:00 p.m. at the Hall B of the Yanagihara Yoshitasu Memorial Gallery, Entrance Hall and the courtyard ISHII Atsuo (1940- ) , born at the Chiba Prefecture and a pupil of TATEHATA Kakuzo, began his artistic career since the 1960s. After the metal works in his early years and stone sculpture since the 1980s, Ishii chose brick as his material. His working procedure is characteristic. At first bricks are joined by mortar and accumulated as rectangular parallelepiped. Each work is made from mass of bricks thus shaped. Just as a sculpture is made of stone or wood, he carves his sculpture from big mass of bricks. On the surface of brick sculpture appear various patterns weaved by red-brown of bricks and grey-white of mortar. Brick sculpture proposes us problem of texture or color of surface, with three-dimensional problem of space and structure. In mortar joining bricks papers are mixed, and the papers are made of books transfromed into fiber, which was originally A Concise History of Modern Sculpture (1964) by Herbert Read (1893-1968), english art critic. It shows Ishii's strong will seeking after the origin of art of sculpture. |
