We proudly present the exhibition,”Contemporary Indonesian Prints.”
Unlike in Japan, a country with a long tradition in printmaking, printmaking is still a relatively new genre in the Indonesian art world. In the beginning, artists worked under difficult circumstances, including shortages of ink and other materials. However, with the enrichment of the art schools as well as the improving standard of living that often accompanies economic prosperity, the artists, passionately searching for progressive types of art, have been able to overcome these problems.
Partly inspired by their rich natural environment and multiethnic background, they continue to create through self-examination and interaction with society with the perceptive eyes of artists who are constantly at the forefront of contemporary culture.
This exhibition introduces 45 new works by 158 artists, some of whom are pioneers of, and others of whom are newcomers to, Indonesian printmaking. By organizing the first collective exhibition of its kind in Japan, we hope to deeply explore the world of contemporary Indonesian prints.
We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all those in Indonesia and in Japan who have assisted us in making this exhibition possible.
