Bukichi Inoue (1930-1997), the three-dimensional plastic artist, was born in Muroo, Nara Prefecture and embarked into the world of sculpture which blossomed rapidly after the War, starting his career with the “Insect” series. His early works which expressed the situation of society and man allegorically reached a turning point around the time when he was creating “A Memorial Fountain - a Monument for Unknown Soldiers” in 1967. His concept of sculpture widened to include the design of the environment surrounding the works. The designs of the Hakone Open - Air Museum and Ikeda Museum of20th Century Art are two of his representative achievements in this area. Through his stay in Europe for studies around this time, especially through his sojourn in West Berlin, the artist’s pursuit of sculptural space went even farther, crystallizing in the “Box” series which was succeeded by another series entitled “my sky hole”. This present exhibition is derived from “Bukichi Inoue - my sky hole 1985”, the show held at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum two years ago, and We have expanded it under a new concept to contain six three-dimensional works and twenty new drawings. We hope that this exhibition will afford its viewers an opportunity to experience a new world of plastic art where reality and fiction interpenetrate. |
