Asano Yae was born at Suzuka in Mie on the 1st October, 1914. His activity as a painter dates back to 1939, but his oldest extant work is dated 1952, and it seems to be the latter half of 1950s that his proper style was realized.

For example so called ‘scratching on white’ is produced as following; at first, on canvas are painted thick and flat layers of white ground. Secondly lines are drawn by something pointed like iron stylus. In the next place black is painted on the surface, and subsequently wiped away. Consequently black remains basically only at the bottom of scratched lines.

On - rather, in - thus produced works lines show various transformations. At one time lines play freely, at another time tiny parts are assembled, and in other cases regular patterns are drawn.

These works, often reduced to black and white, at the same time betray some intimate characteristics, because of materiality of working process. Asano’s work never shows grandiose sublimeness, but communicates soft and calm feeling.

Asano died on February, 1996.
