Exhibition Overview
Mie Prefectural Art Museum opened the Yanagihara Yoshitatsu Memorial Gallery in 2003 after receiving a donation of works from Yanagihara Yoshitatsu (1910-2004), a prominent sculptor in the realm of postwar Japanese figurative sculpture. Since then, our museum has paid tribute to him by constantly displaying his works to the public.
In 2019, with the support of the artist's bereaved family, Y² project was launched as a new project to promote the next generation of artists. This exhibition, the second in the project, will introduce Yasuhiro Fujiwara (b. 1968). Born in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture, Fujiwara graduated from an art university in Japan, studied in London, and now lives in Iga City, Mie Prefecture.
Based on his interest in "memory" and "in-between," Fujiwara has been depicting mountains and forests that lie between the images in our subconscious and the actual landscape. For this exhibition, Fujiwara has identified "ridges" as the keyword that connects his own work with that of Yanagihara, which at first glance appear linear but have a complex depth. At the exhibition, sculptures by Yanagihara will be exhibited along with Fujiwara's new works.
