Exhibition Overview
Born in Iga City, Mie Prefecuture, Hineno Sakuzo (1907-1984) is known as a pioneer of ceramic design. After studying at the Tokyo High School of Arts and Crafts, he developed his talent as a designer at the Tsubaki Kiln and the National Ceramics Research Institute. After the war, he became independent designer and based in Iga. He traveled to the pottery areas of Aichi, Gifu, Mie, Shiga, etc., striving to teach and popularize design.
In the post-war era, when manufacturing was mechanized and mass-produced, Hineno focused on "craft," a lifestyle tool with a modern feel that was mainly handmade. Hineno advocates a design with a human touch that takes advantage of the craftsmanship and individuality that the creators are good at, as well as the diversity of each region.
This exhibition is the largest retrospective exhibition ever, tracing the life of Hineno Sakuzo from approximately 180 works and materials left in various places. Please enjoy the charm of Hineno's designs that have not faded to this day.
