Charles-François Daubigny : Toward Impressionism

10 September- 4 November 2019

Exhibition Overview

Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878) was an artist that played a significant role in the development of landscape painting in Nineteenth-Century France.

After a short-term stay in Italy and academic training in his youth, he built a distinct reputation as a landscape painter in the art scene of Paris.

After he acquired a studio-boat in 1857, he began trying a unique working style on the boat which made him possible to depict vivid riverscapes.

While his works were widely accepted, his rough and bold brush strokes were sometimes criticized at the time.

He was known as an ardent supporter of innovative young artists such as Claude Monet (1840-1926), a leading Impressionist whom he influenced greatly.

This exhibition shows around 20 paintings of Daubigny’s surroundings as well as approximately 80 works of art of the artist himself. The exhibits come from various museums and private collections in France and Japan, especially from the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Reims.
