Mie prefecture is located roughly in the middle of the Japanese archipelago. It stretches from north to south and is surrounded by a wide variety of natural landscapes, including a deep ocean with a depth of 2,000 meters and high mountains with an altitude of nearly 1,700 meters. In terms of the richness in nature, Mie is just like a miniature version of the Japanese archipelago which has both subarctic and subtropical biomes in itself. Such rich and diversified natural environments have had much influence on different lifestyles of people and their history. Since ancient times, Mie has enjoyed prosperity as a key junction for traffic. Besides, as a cultural intersection between East and West Japan and as a place where mountain and maritime cultures meet each other, it also has created new and diverse cultures through active interactions among different people and cultures.
